"Welcome to the first meeting of the Midwest Chapter of Vampires
Anonymous. I know a lot of you cadavers have traveled a long way to be
with us tonight, so take a few minutes to stretch your legs, wings, or
whatever, hang your capes in the cloak room, then join us here in the
circle. You'll find some refreshments on the back table, compliments of
a Red Cross blood drive held this afternoon. A big flash of the fangs
to Duchess Katie Longtooth for coordinating that project."
A polite round of applause followed the announcement. The group leader Baron Brad Mooreland shut the mike off.
He watched with satisfaction as nearly 30 vampires from all across Illinois, Iowa, Wisconsin and Missouri flocked around the refreshment table in the basement meeting hall of The Temple Sholom on the far north side of Chicago. It represented less than a tenth of the Midwest Undead. But vampires, being the lone-wolf personality type, were intrinsically non-joiners. Let the cabal call him crazy. V.A. was going to work.
He flipped the mike back on again. "A quick question for our Jewish vampires: Are any of you experiencing any discomfort from our location? No? Good." He flipped the mike back off.
Obviously, a Christian church basement, the traditional setting for such groups, wouldn't work for Vampires Anonymous. The Baron had gotten the idea of using a synagogue from one of his recent victims. The old man had held up a Star of David to ward him off. One dead rabbi later, the Baron knew where to hold the meeting.
To the Baron Brad's knowledge, no organized research had been done to test the effects of other religions' accoutrements. He shook his head. The Undead just had to get organized before they were exterminated.
